Székesfehérvár
The Town of Kings Awaits You!
Székesfehérvár the town of Kings, the cradle of Hungarian statehood, and site of national assemblies, lies in the geographical centre of Central Transdanubia. The town was founded around AD 972 by Prince Géza, father of the first Hungarian king. With the exception of his son, Saint Stephen, all Hungarian kings were crowned here until there Middle Ages. And most rulers were also buried here. The National Memorial Site in the centre of the town is a worthy tribute to the stormy Hungarian past.
Next to it the charming baroque town centre grew up during the reconstruction that followed the period of Turkish occupation. The two buildings of the Town Hall, the beautiful Bishop’s Palace, the churches now almost three centuries old, the mediaeval buildings, remains of the old town wall and the winding, cobble – stoned streets together form a unique group of historical monuments well complemented by the imposing public buildings and houses erected in the 19th century. Of special interest in Székesfehérvár are the statues, monuments and fountains in honour of outstanding historical events, erected in the squares and parks, at the foot of the castle walls and in secluded corners. The Bory Castle at the edge of town is an interesting attraction. It was built by an artist of that name, and combines a variety of architectural styles.
