Royal Days INTERNATIONAL FOLK DANCE Festival

Székesfehérvár, Hungary

WELCOME SPEECH

The Alba Regia Dance Society has been the main organizer of the Royal Days International Folk Dance Festival since the beginning, since 1996. Our dance club takes every little step to ensure that those who come to us - guest groups, visitors, spectators, our friends - feel at home in Székesfehérvár, in the Dance House. We are good hosts because our group, the Alba Regia Dance Group, has traveled the world, we have learned a lot from other festivals and we know what they like, what is expected of them and what attracts the visitors. We are also aware that there are people who cannot travel abroad, for them such a festival is equivalent to a trip around the world, and finally, in 2024, the world will come to us again.

Until now, we would have invited international participants, but our options were limited. Just as we couldn’t travel, others also had to think carefully about the trips.

We are in a lucky position, because it is easy to meet the demands, as we have 27 years of experience behind us, a ready-to-action team, volunteers, our dancers and the families of the children who come to us.

What can you expect? Introductions on the main stage, colorful parades, gastro-folk evenings in the Dance House, street dance and street music, heat, friendships and love.

Just as you are used to from us!

Warm welcome for all of you, we are waiting for you!

Zsófia Juhász
director, main organizer

History of Royal Days

History of Royal Days

Historic Background

For over 1000 years August has been a special time of year for Székesfehérvár. St. Stephen, founder of the Hungarian State, made the month of August a month of celebration as a tribute to Christianity. Although after his death and later canonization the religious celebrations continued, the festivity shortly became the celebration of St. Stephen himself.

The “Golden Charter” in 1222 –Europe’s second constitution – reinforced the importance of the occasion making it into a national holiday, St. Stephen’s memorial day. Thanks to Royal Days, Alba Regia (the latin name for Székesfehérvár) became the governmental centre of the Hungary.

Back in the old days, around 20th August the king visited Székesfehérvár, and during his visit held a reception learning about the matters of state. During his visit St. Stephen’s memorial day was also celebrated.

The former coronation town remembers its past through dance and music, while ensembles arriving from many countries around the world present their folk dances and music.

festival Mission

  • To learn and expose the culture of nations from around the world
  • To establish connections and friendships internationally
  • To promote the town of Székesfehérvár and Fejér county both locally and internationally

Our guests

🇲🇽 Mexico - BAFOFIM Ballet Folklorico Fiesta Mexicana

One of the most important Mexican dance associations, it has been operating since 1987. Its purpose is to preserve and nurture the cultural traditions of Mexico, in which it is undoubtedly one of the richest countries. The folklore of Mexico is colorful and mystical, and the best way to express it is the dance. On their programs, we can make an imaginary journey through this magical region. The stage will be the vehicle with which we will travel the entire country, reaching even the most hidden corners of Mexico.

🇪🇸 Spain - Rosa Del Azafrán

The name of the association, founded in the 1950s, coincides with one of the oldest festivals in Spain, the Rosa Del Azafrán Folklore Festival, which is visited by several groups from all over the country. Their philosophy is to connect the past and the present. The tradition is the basis for their repertoire, clothing, and performances. They have three traditional dances from the La Mancha region: the seguidilla, the fandango and the jota, which are performed with instruments characteristic of the region - lute, bandurria, guitar, violin.

The dance club was founded in 1975 in the town of Rimavská Sobota in southern Slovakia. The club has approximately 80 members, which divided into several, independently working groups, as well as a singing and folk music group led by Primate Vratko Mančuška. They often represent themselves beyond the borders of Slovakia, they have already participated in nearly 40 festivals on 3 different continents.
