Royal Days INTERNATIONAL FOLK DANCE Festival
Székesfehérvár, Hungary
For over 1,000 years, August has been a special time of year for Székesfehérvár. St. Stephen, the founder of the Hungarian State, designated the month of August as a time of celebration in tribute to Christianity. Although the religious festivities continued after his death and later canonization, the occasion soon evolved into a celebration of St. Stephen himself.
The "Golden Bull of 1222" - often regarded as Europe's second constitution - further reinforced the importance of the occasion, establishing St. Stephen’s Day as a national holiday. Thanks to Royal Days, Alba Regia (the Latin name of Székesfehérvár) became the governmental centre of Hungary.
Back in the old days, around 20th of August, the king visited Székesfehérvár and held royal assemblies to discuss matters of state. During these visits, St. Stephen’s Day was also celebrated.
Today, the former coronation city honours its rich heritage through dance and music, while ensembles from many countries around the world present their traditional folk dances and musical performances.
